How the Hunter Rank System Works

Before the characters make sense, the ranking system does. Every awakened human in Solo Leveling is graded by the Hunter’s Association, and that grade determines what dungeons they can enter and how much they earn.

Two details are worth knowing. First, a hunter’s rank is fixed at awakening — it does not increase with training. Jinwoo is the sole exception, and the story exists because of it. Second, National Level is not an official grade issued by the Association. It is an informal designation for the handful of hunters whose power is considered a strategic national asset.

The Three Factions

The conflict in Solo Leveling is not humans versus monsters. It is a much older war between two ancient factions, with humanity caught in the middle.

Main Characters

Sung Jinwoo

The protagonist, and the only hunter in history who can level up. He begins as an E-Rank hunter mocked as “humanity’s weakest” and becomes the second Shadow Monarch. His signature ability, Shadow Extraction, turns defeated enemies into permanent soldiers.

Cha Hae-In

Vice-Guild Master of the Hunters Guild and one of only a handful of S-Rank hunters in South Korea. Her awakening left her with a heightened sense of smell that makes most hunters physically repellent to her — Jinwoo is the exception, which is how the two first connect. She fights with a longsword and is regarded as one of the fastest hunters in the country.

Yoo Jinho

A D-Rank hunter from a wealthy family who becomes Jinwoo’s first real ally and later Vice-Guild Master of the Ahjin Guild. He is not a strong fighter and knows it. His value is loyalty, funding, and the fact that he treats Jinwoo as a person rather than an asset.

Sung Jinah

Jinwoo’s younger sister and the reason he keeps entering dungeons in the first place. She is a student for most of the story and remains outside the hunter world, which is exactly how Jinwoo wants it.

Go Gunhee

Chairman of the Korean Hunter’s Association and an S-Rank hunter himself despite his age. He is one of the first people to notice that Jinwoo’s strength does not match his registered rank, and he protects him rather than exposing him.

The National Level Hunters

Five hunters in the world are classified beyond S-Rank. Each is treated as a national strategic asset by their home country.

The Shadow Army

Jinwoo’s soldiers are characters in their own right, with personalities and loyalties that develop across the story.

The Monarchs

Nine Monarchs rule the monster realms, and their goal is the extinction of humanity. Each commands a species and a domain.

Ashborn is the structural key to the entire series. He was the Shadow Monarch before Jinwoo, defected to the Rulers’ side, and eventually chose a human successor — which is where the System comes from.

The Rulers

The Rulers are the Monarchs’ opposing faction — ancient beings who protect humanity, though not out of affection for it. Where the Monarchs act directly, the Rulers work through proxies: they grant fragments of their power to selected humans, which is how “awakening” works in the first place.

Their most consequential intervention is the System itself — a training interface built to prepare one human to inherit the Shadow Monarch’s authority.

Which Characters Has the Anime Covered?

Anime-only viewers have met most of the Korean hunters but very few of the Monarchs and none of the Rulers directly.
