The System is the game-like interface only Sung Jinwoo can see. It was built by the Architect — a mage also known as Kandiaru — on behalf of Ashborn, the original Shadow Monarch.
It was never meant to make Jinwoo a better hunter. It was a training programme to find and prepare a human body strong enough to hold the power of death.

What the System Does
To Jinwoo, the System looks like a video game laid over reality: a status window with stats and a level, quests with rewards, an inventory, a shop, and skills that unlock as he grows.
Its most famous feature is the daily quest — 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10-kilometre run. Skip it, and the System drops him into a penalty zone, a desert of giant centipedes, until the time runs out. It is the reason an E-Rank hunter begins to outgrow everyone around him.
- Levels with no cap — unlike every other hunter, Jinwoo keeps growing
- Quests and penalties — rewards for completing them, punishment for refusing
- Hidden functions — it silently translates monster language, which Jinwoo only notices in the Red Gate
- Warnings — it alerts him to lethal danger before it lands
Who Built the System?
Not the Rulers, and not Jinwoo’s own potential. The System was built by the Architect — a mage also known as Kandiaru — working on behalf of Ashborn, the original Shadow Monarch.
The game format was a deliberate choice. Games are something humans understand instinctively, so a game-like interface was the most effective way to train a human: clear goals, visible progress, and rewards for pushing harder.
Why It Exists
Ashborn needed a successor — a human vessel able to hold the power of death. No ordinary body could survive receiving it all at once. The System was the solution: a programme that would find a candidate and then strengthen them, level by level, until they could.
Our read
The System was never a reward. Read in hindsight, every quest, penalty, and level-up was preparation for an inheritance Jinwoo did not know about. That is why it feels arbitrary early on — and why it stops mattering the moment the inheritance is complete.
Why Jinwoo?
The System found him in the Double Dungeon, dying. What made him the right candidate was not strength — he was the weakest hunter alive — but his will to keep going when anyone else would have stopped.
Spoilers beyond the anime
This page discusses material from the manhwa that the anime has not reached yet.
Who Controls the System?
The Architect runs it, and for most of the story he appears to be the one in charge. But he had his own plans for the vessel he was building, and he opposed Ashborn’s choice of Jinwoo.
When Jinwoo reaches level 100 and returns to the temple where the Double Dungeon began, the Architect finally reveals himself — and Ashborn sides with Jinwoo, betraying the Architect. The will behind the System was always Ashborn’s.
What Happens to the System?
Once Jinwoo fully inherits the Shadow Monarch’s authority, the System has done its job and is removed. He no longer levels up; he simply has the power it was preparing him for. Shortly afterwards, Bellion — Ashborn’s Grand Marshal — arrives to serve him.
Does Anyone Else Get a System?
Yes — in the sequel. Sung Suho inherits a System of his own, but it caps at level 99, because the original was built specifically for Ashborn’s vessel.
The System is also easy to confuse with the world’s hunter ranks, which every hunter has. Our power system guide separates the two.
