From Ruler to Monarch
Ashborn did not begin as a Monarch. He was a Ruler — a being of light created by the Absolute Being — and the strongest of them, known as the Greatest Fragment of Brilliant Light.
For ages he fought the Monarchs on the Absolute Being’s behalf. Then the Rulers discovered the truth: their creator had made both sides to fight forever for his own entertainment, and refused to end it. The Rulers rebelled and killed him.
Ashborn was the only Ruler who stayed loyal. He tried to stop the rebellion alone, was struck down by his own comrades, and left to die. But the Absolute Being had hidden a power inside him — authority over death — and it brought him back. By the time he returned, his creator was already dead.
The Outsider
He could not go back to the Rulers after what they had done, and their treatment of the Monarchs — including capturing Legia — drove him to the other side. He became the Monarch of Shadows, King of the Dead.
Neither side ever fully trusted him. The Monarchs feared his strength; the Rulers later sought his forgiveness. Ashborn belonged to both factions at different times and to neither completely — the most isolated being in the setting.
Our read
Ashborn is the tragic centre of Solo Leveling. He was the only one loyal to a god who did not deserve it, punished for that loyalty by his own kind, and left with a power that made everyone afraid of him. Everything Jinwoo inherits — the army, the title, the loneliness — starts here.
Spoilers beyond the anime
This page discusses material from the manhwa that the anime has not reached yet.
Why He Needed a Vessel
When the Monarchs turned their attention to the human world, Ashborn followed — looking for a human who could carry his power. No ordinary body could hold the power of death. So he worked with the Architect to build the System: a programme to find a candidate and strengthen them until they could.
Why He Chose Sung Jinwoo
The System found Jinwoo dying in the Double Dungeon. The Architect had doubts about him. Ashborn did not: watching Jinwoo refuse to give up, again and again, convinced him this was the one.
When the Architect finally revealed himself and opposed that choice, Ashborn betrayed him and sided with Jinwoo.
The Handover
During the Monarchs’ war, Jinwoo is killed by Rakan, the Monarch of Fangs. Ashborn appears to him and offers a choice. Jinwoo chooses to keep fighting — and Ashborn passes on everything, making him the second Shadow Monarch.
Ashborn’s Army
Two of Jinwoo’s most important soldiers were Ashborn’s first. Igris waited eons beside an empty throne to test his master’s successor. Bellion, the Grand Marshal, served Ashborn throughout the ancient war and transferred his loyalty to Jinwoo without hesitation.
Is Ashborn Dead?
In the sense that matters, yes — he does not continue as an independent character after the handover. His power and his army live on through Jinwoo.
The sequel adds a final layer: the Shadow Monarch’s true power combines darkness and light — the only power in the setting that belongs to both sides, just as Ashborn did. For how he measures up against the strongest Monarch, see Ashborn vs Antares.
