The Two Systems, Separated
Most explanations of Solo Leveling’s power system collapse these into one thing. They are not the same, and keeping them apart is what makes the story’s structure click.
The hunter rank system is public infrastructure. Associations test awakened people, assign a grade, and that grade determines what dungeons they can legally enter. It is bureaucratic, measurable, and — crucially — static.
Jinwoo’s System is none of those things. It is invisible to everyone else, issues quests with penalties for failure, and has no ceiling. He is not a hunter who got stronger. He is running different software.
Hunter Ranks: E Through National Level
When a person awakens, an Association evaluates their magic capacity and assigns a rank. That rank is set for life.

How Gates and Dungeons Work
Gates are portals connecting Earth to dungeon spaces. They appear without warning, are graded on the same E-to-S scale as hunters, and contain a boss whose defeat closes the gate.
The mechanic that actually drives the plot is the timer. A gate left uncleared for too long undergoes a dungeon break — the barrier fails and the monsters inside spill into the surrounding city. This is why hunters are a profession rather than a hobby, and why Associations exist at all.
